What good news as the mentally challenged are being offered housing that fits their needs! Cities around the nation are recognizing this issue and responding.
Two years ago, I cleaned a friends' daughter's apartment. The story was that the daughter was born with the cord around her neck. Not receiving enough oxygen, her mental capacities were diminshed. She looks normal and can even function to the point of driving. Unfortunatly, the residents at the apartment complex picked on her and created some trouble for her. This young girl is approximetely in her late twenties, early thirties. So the mother bought a house in town for her to live at. Had our area set up appropriate housing, this young girl could have lived there.
Kansas, Massachusetts, and California have established housing programs. There is also the McKinney Loan program. This helps them live a more independent lifestyle. For more, check out the website below:
