I’ll never forget that day in August. A family member sat down at the table and told us he was finally diagnosed with leukemia. He couldn’t figure out why he was so tired all the time. Through extensive tests the doctors reached their conclusion. So off to the treatment center for rounds of chemo and what not.
By the time October hit, he wasn’t doing so well. In an attempt to prepare for winter, he burned the leaves, and serviced the refrigerator trucks at work. Not a good combination. A nasty virus attacked his lungs, leaving him down and out and in the hospital. The hospital tried to keep him stable. However this was a man who already had dealt with a heart attack. He finally slipped into a coma.
It was at this point that as a family, we tried to come together and pray as one. We would stand around the hospital bed and pray. Several times the blood counts were way off. Platelets had to be flown in and administered. He was so critically ill. He almost perished twice in the hospital. We continued to pray. Many people came to see him, give us encouragement or just be there for us. Little by little improvements started to come. He began coming out of the coma. Then he was weaned from the ventilator. Physical therapy came next. Finally he was able to go home!
Next came the bout of the nasty virus sedif. It took all his strength to keep everything in. Finally, he was able to get the One Hundred Twenty dollar drug he needed to combat this. What a long road to recovery.
Today, to observe him you would never know this occurred. He is able to do a few of the things he loves, like working in a garden, helping friends, and fixing equipment. He is truly a miracle walking!
