Somewhere back in the seventies, the game of softball was quite appealing to me. I’m not sure if it was the game itself, the camaraderie of my teammates or the celebration afterward! I remember how we started out a rag tag team just out for fun. We commissioned a couple of coaches (I think we bribed them) and began some training. We eventually became half way decent and were still having fun. After a few years, we changed players a little bit, but had a core team. We weren’t too shabby.
The coaches signed us up for some tournaments that turned out to be an absolute blast. Somehow we managed to get ourselves to district champions! It was really unbelievable how it happened, because none of us were that great. We ended up going to the state championship where we lost out pretty fast.
What I most remember was an invaluable lesson that stays with me. It is the lesson of accomplishing a goal as a team. You see, apart none of us was that great. But we practiced and played and partied and became like a family to each other. This tapped that powerful phenomenon of synergy. We could read each other on the different plays. We became as one. We were truly a team. Once we started these tournaments, we had goals of winning and playing to our best ability. The whole process gave us a sense of empowerment to do better and win more.
Well the team eventually disbanded. We knew we had to get on with life, marriage, families etc. The lesson remains with me. I’ve seen it work in the work place and in family life. If more families could experience that synergy, their lives would be forever changed. All their goals could be met, making those dreams come true. Families would stay together, because it is truly an awesome feeling you don’t want to end. The world would be a better place.
